Do you calculate Notice Period Buyout on Basic Salary or Gross Salary, and do you allow leave adjustments?

Anonymous HR Professional · 19 Aug 2026 · india · Technology · 11-50 employees

When managing early employee exits and notice period shortfalls during Full and Final (F&F) settlements, organizations differ in how they calculate the recovery amount. While traditional practices compute the recovery purely on Basic Salary, some organizations enforce Gross Salary recovery to offset project disruptions. Additionally, policies vary on whether accrued Earned Leaves can be directly adjusted against the notice shortfall.

What they have tried

We reviewed policies across IT services (strict 60–90 day notice with limited buyout options) and startups (flexible 30-day buyouts on basic pay). We also evaluated tax handling where candidates have their buyout reimbursed by their new employer.

Desired outcome

HR and Payroll leaders' practices on whether Basic or Gross is your company benchmark, and your policy criteria for permitting accrued leaves to offset remaining notice days.
